Child heard screaming as mum was shot in the head in case of mistaken identity

A girl was heard screaming "my mum has been shot in the head" after she was fatally gunned down in a suspected case of mistaken identity.

It is said the victim, named as 42-year-old Lianne Gordon, ran out into the street to protect her son, but took bullet and was declared dead at the scene in Hackney, east London, on Tuesday night. No arrests have been made in connection to the shooting, which also left a 16-year-old boy and a 20-year-old man wounded. Both have non life-threatening injuries, Metropolitan Police confirmed today.

A neighbour said: "I heard three shots then there was a girl screaming 'my mum has been shot in the head'... I thought the gunshots were fireworks at first but then it was carnage and chaos on the street."

Another resident, called Mahir, told The Sun: "She was trying to protect someone that what we heard. She was not the target."

And a man working at a garage nearby said a passer-by, who lives near to where the shooting occurred, told him he'd heard the mother shouting, "No, don't do it" before several gunshots rang out. The garage worker, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "He came by on his bike and said she came out after hearing shooting... He said his daughter heard her shouting: 'No, don't do it, don't do it!'."

The two other victims shot on Vine Close in Hackney were known to not be related to each other, but were known to Ms Gordon. Officers are not ruling out gang involvement or a link to shots fired in the same area a few days before.

Detective Chief SuperIndependent James Conway, the Borough Commander for Hackney, added that though it was too early to comment on a motive, they were considering that the shooting was "gang-related".

"I want to assure everyone that this will be a painstaking investigation. We are determined to bring those responsible to justice. It’s too early to comment on motive, though we are considering that this was gang related," the officer said.

Mr Conway confirmed there was another shooting in the same area on December 2. Met Police are considering the two incidents may have been linked.

Caroline Woodley, the recently elected Mayor of Hackney, said she understood the community would be "shocked, worried and distressed". She said: "I just want to say this is an absolutely heart-breaking incident, and my thoughts and everyone’s at the council’s are with the loved ones of Lianne and of the other injured victims.

"We are working with the police to support the families of the victims and will continue to do so in the coming weeks and months. We are also working with local schools and community groups to offer any support they need.

“While incidents like this are thankfully rare in Hackney, we know that the community will be shocked, worried and distressed. Council officers are in the area to support the police investigation and to provide reassurance to local people."
