Prince Harry's Spare reaches unfortunate milestone months after publishing date

Prince Harry’s autobiography was a best-seller in January, but now, eleven months later, it’s a most-returner.

Spare, his bombshell tome about life in and out of the Royal family, caused even larger fissures between the Duke of Sussex, 39, and his family - and it left some scars on the general public too. It’s hard to believe that this time last year we were blissfully unaware of how Harry and his “piping hot” brother Prince William grappled on the floor of Nottingham Cottage; how he used Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream to soothe his frostbitten penis; and how he lost his virginity to an older woman in a pub garden.

But it seems jaw-dropping anecdotes and entitled musings aren’t enough to keep his book on some people’s shelves. Spare has been named as WeBuyBooks’ most traded in biography of 2023. The book reseller said that it accepted hundreds of copies of the 416-page memoir - and it “could have been a lot more”.

A spokesperson told The Telegraph: “Prince Harry’s Spare was our most traded-in biography of the year. We’ve accepted 459 copies. We limit how many we accept in a timeframe so chances are if we’d accepted every copy, there’d have been a lot more!”

When it was released, Spare had a RRP of £28, but it is currently selling for £14 on Amazon, and £19.99 at Waterstones. WeBuyBooks would offer £2.40 for a second hand copy.

When Spare came out, it sold 1.4m copies on its first day in the UK, USA and Canadian markets, and it was given a Guinness World Record for the fastest selling non-fiction book of all time.

It was available in digital, paperback, and hardcover formats in 15 different languages. There’s also a 15-hour audiobook edition, narrated by Harry, if you really wanted to feel truly immersed in his story.

Despite selling so well, a lot of criticism was aimed at Harry for airing his family’s dirty laundry - including private conversations between him and the Queen, and what seemed to be a feeling of general dislike towards his brother. He was also slammed for revealing that he had killed 25 men while fighting with the British Army in Afghanistan.
