A man has died in a gated cul-de-sac on a Birmingham estate after refusing medical treatment for a suspected serious stab wound the previous day.

The ambulance crews arrived shortly after 10pm yesterday and treated a man, in his 30s, 'with serious but not life-threatening injuries'. Despite their advice, the man refused to go to hospital. It's believed he had a severe hand injury.

Witnesses say the incident happened near Iceland supermarket on Erdington High Street and the injured man was then seen on the opposite side of the road, before ending up in Wood End Road off Six Ways Island. At 12.45am on Wednesday, a second call was made to the ambulance service.

This time, the man was taken to Good Hope Hospital but left before being admitted. It's thought that the man then walked down Rectory Road, where he was spotted by a local resident, and then on to Broome Gardens, a gated cul-de-sac in Sutton Coldfield.

Early on Wednesday morning, the ambulance service received a third call for a 'medical emergency' around 6.20am. The man is believed to have been in cardiac arrest according to the police. A member of the public was giving basic life support when ambulance crews arrived.

Paramedics took over and took the man back to Good Hope Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "We were called to reports of a stabbing on Wood End Road in Erdington, Birmingham at 10.18pm. Two ambulances and a paramedic officer were sent to the scene, with the first resource arriving in five minutes. Crews found a man with serious but not life-threatening injuries and treated him at the scene. He did not wish to go to hospital and so was given self-care advice and discharged."

The ambulance service added: "We were called to a medical emergency on Broome Gardens in Sutton Coldfield at around 6.20am on Wednesday (November 29). Two ambulances and a paramedic officer were sent to the scene where, on arrival, crews found a man in a critical condition receiving basic life support from a member of the public.

"Ambulance crews immediately took over and began administering advanced life support before he was conveyed on blue lights to Good Hope Hospital with treatment continuing en-route."

West Midlands Police are still trying to figure out if the man was stabbed and what caused his death. They haven't said where the man was from yet.

A police spokesman said: "We're investigating after the unexplained death of a man in Sutton Coldfield on Wednesday morning. We were called by paramedics to Broome Gardens at around 6.30am to reports that a man in his 30s had been found injured. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at hospital a short time later. We are working to establish how he came to be injured and at this stage the death is being treated as unexplained.

"We are carrying out CCTV enquiries, and a post-mortem examination will be held in due court to establish the cause of death. It's believed the man may have earlier been on Erdington High Street, and we have officers carrying out enquiries there. Anyone with information has been asked to get in touch, quoting log 434 of 29 November."
