A US tourist suffering from lung disease died while snorkelling off an island in Thailand after tragically falling off a speedboat.

Danny G Liu, 75, had been riding a speedboat to go diving off Khai Island near Phuket when he fell face-down in the water on November 22 morning. Tour guide Ampol Baonerd, 33, said the holidaymaker began to choke, and other passengers rushed to pull him back onto the boat.

They rushed him to the Laem Nga Pier while performing CPR before an ambulance arrived to take him to the Phuket Provincial Administrative Organization Hospital. However, the elderly holidaymaker was soon pronounced dead. Police Lieutenant Colonel Weerayuth Thansirisukvorakul of the Phuket City Police said they received a report about Danny's death at around 11 am.

Investigations found that the American had arrived in Phuket with his wife and child on November 18. They were scheduled to fly out of the country on November 27.

Danny's wife told officers he had been suffering from cystic fibrosis, a genetic condition that can cause thick mucus blockage in organs including the lungs, digestive system, and pancreas. His body will undergo a post-mortem examination at the Vachira Phuket Hospital.

Police said the tour company, Diamond Sea Marine, had up to 1 million baht (£22,000) in death insurance coverage for guests. The US Consulate in Phuket has been informed of Danny's passing.

It comes after a mum and daughter have been arrested after two children died in a tragic swimming pool accident while left unattended at a daycare. Nina Fathizadeh, 41, and her mother, Shahin Gheblehshenas, 64, face felony charges of neglect resulting in death and non-life-threatening injuries after the incident at Happy Happy Daycare in San Jose, California, on October 2.

Two children drowned in the daycare's backyard swimming pool while another was left injured and recovered from the water, according to prosecutors. They had been left alone while Fathizadeh prepared tea and oatmeal. Gheblehshenas was at a different daycare on the day, leaving them short of staff after another worker called in sick. Fathizadeh returned to the pool five minutes later to find one of the children, a two-year-old boy, floating and unconscious.

She gave him CPR and called 911, before waking up her brother in the bedroom to alert him to the situation. The brother then discovered the two girls aged 16 and 18 months floating in the deep end, and the pair were later pronounced dead in the hospital. The two-year-old is expected to make a full recovery.

State officials have since suspended the day care's licence, with details emerging of numerous issues in the past surrounding the centre. It was visited eight times in the space of just three years by California's Department of Social Services.
