Analysis of police force data has identified the areas of England and Wales most vulnerable to break-ins over the festive period.
Using information from datapolice.uk on reported property theft during November and December over the last three years, insurance company Howden Insurance found homeowners in South Yorkshire to be most at risk with an average of 148 burglaries per 100,000 residents.
Norfolk meanwhile saw the lowest number of festive break-ins, recording a comparatively low total figure of 1,043 burglaries – amounting to only 37 burglaries per 100,000 residents on average.
Dyfed-Powys ranked second safest with an average of 41, followed closely by Wiltshire, Sussex, and North Yorkshire, which rated third, fourth, and fifth safest respectively.
Vigilance is nevertheless to be encouraged as Norfolk Police, covering King's Lynn, Great Yarmouth, and Thetford, fielded an 18.83 percent increase in reported burglaries between 2020 and 2022. Dyfed-Powys Police, operating across the counties of Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire, and Powys, registered an increase of 3.26 percent. However, it was Staffordshire that recorded the largest overall increase (43.6 percent) since 2020. Leicestershire and Gloucestershire witnessed increases of 30.2 percent and 19.57 percent respectively.

Home security system
Consider installing a home security system if you don't have one already. This can include alarms, motion detectors, and security cameras.
Secure doors and windows
Check and double-check that all doors and windows are securely locked before leaving the house. Entry points should be reinforced with deadbolt locks if at all possible. ,
Timed lighting
Timed lighting can deter potential burglars by giving the appearance that someone is home. Smart plugs and bulbs should be programmed to simulate your usual daily routines so that thieves are less likely to spot an opportunity if and when your movements change.
Secure valuables
Try to store valuable items, such as jewellery and important documents, in a hidden location. Consider using a safe for added security.

Home security systems and other widgets may be outside your budget but it is cost-free to avoid posting too much about your whereabouts on social media. Avoid broadcasting specific travel plans as this risks alerting burglars to your home being unoccupied.
A spokesperson for Howden Insurance commented: "With the Christmas shopping season in full swing throughout November and December, it is important to ensure that gifts are kept out of sight in your home, as they can serve as an enticing invitation to criminal onlookers.
"Combine this with the increased likelihood of homes being temporarily vacant as people visit family and friends over the Christmas period, and you create the ideal conditions for opportunistic thieves.
"Beyond the financial aspect, the emotional impact of having your gifts stolen is considerable and can result in stress and disappointment during what should otherwise be a joyous time. By taking proactive measures to secure their property, homeowners can reduce the risk of break-ins during these risker winter months".
