A jealous thug has been jailed for beating his partner so many times she lost count. Liam Doyle strangled the woman until she lost consciousness, tried to control what she wore, and got on top of her to gouge at her eyes, a court heard.

During the course of their relationship, the dad-of-seven also called her offensive names, decided who she saw, and made her delete her Facebook account. The 35-year-old, from Nottingham, has been sent to prison for three years.

The judge said he was an "insecure man" and that was the reason he sought to control her. He added: "You did that in many different ways, keeping tabs on where she was, who she was with, what she was doing and what she was wearing.

“You prevented her from undertaking work, called her ‘a s***’ and you made her delete her Facebook account. As the relationship progressed you started to assault her, she said in her statement, you assaulted her so many times that she cannot remember."

Judge Mark Watson, at Nottingham Crown Court, said: "In May, 2023, one of the assaults was particularly serious with you dragging her and physically picking her up then strangling her by putting your arms around her throat and squeezing until she stopped breathing and lost consciousness. Then, on May 30, there was another incident of violence when you assaulted her by being on top of her, gouging at her eyes, and punching her face.

“Even when she went into a ball you continued to punch her legs. It was relentless.” Judge Watson said the victim had said in a statement that she thought she would die and still wakes from her sleep gasping for air, reports NottinghamshireLive.

Doyle, of Orange Gardens, pleaded guilty to controlling and coercive behaviour, two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and intentional strangulation. His solicitor said the relationship was toxic.
