I'm A Celebrity star Nigel Farage was taken down by a broadcaster in a mortifying clip.

The savage put down occurred during an appearance by the former UKIP leader on RTE One's Claire Byrne Live. He claimed Ireland was "governed by" the EU as he spoke about the effects Brexit has had on Britain and Northern Ireland.

He said: "Why did Irish nationalists fight the British for 500 years, 500 often very bloody, difficult years, until the 1920s – what was the point of it if you're now commissioned by European Commissioners?" Claire replied: "I think people will be entertained Nigel to hear you talking about this..."

Interrupting, Farage continued: "That might be too inconvenient for you all in Dublin, I'm sure," before Claire reminded viewers of a controversial clip Farage filmed for Cameo – a website on which people can pay celebrities for recorded messages.

Look I know you apologised for the birthday greeting which you delivered in the last couple of days but I want people to see just how much you know about the history and culture on this island

In the clip, Farage made a reference to the Irish Republican Army. Holding up a coffee cup as he said: "Now, it's a bit early in the day so all I've got actually is coffee but I hope you enjoy a few pints with the lads tonight. Up the Ra."

"Up the Ra, Nigel? I know that you said sorry, I know you get £87 and it's entirely in your rights to do that. But, come on don't try and lecture the Irish people about the culture and history and precarious nature of peace on this island. You haven't got a clue."

Viewers were enraged by Farage's comments as one said: "How dare he. How dare an English man tell the Irish what they will or won’t do in the future. How dare he comment or judge Irish society or citizenry or government. Not on."

Another added: "Thought Claire was all class there, had him on the back foot instantly", while a third said: "Well done Claire you handled the interview with total professionalism and were poised and mannerly to such an arrogant man."
