Former NFL star Peyton Hillis is reportedly in a critical condition in hospital after rescuing his children from drowning.

Hillis, 36, played for five clubs over his seven-year career in the NFL, including the Cleveland Browns, before retiring in 2015.

His children were reportedly out swimming in the ocean in Pensacola, Florida, when Hillis was required to save them. KNWA reports he was then airlifted to hospital.

The Sidelines Sports Network account claimed his children were "reportedly safe and healthy".

Hillis' uncle Greg took to social media to provide an update on the ex-NFL running back and insisted he is "doing better".

"He is still in intensive care and having some problems with his kidneys and his lungs but doctors say he is improving," the Facebook post read.

"I just wanted to head off any rumours that may be started. I am sure he would want everyone to know that he appreciates all of the prayers being thrown up on his behalf."

Hillis started out as a full back at the University of Arkansas before being drafted to the Denver Broncos in 2008. He spent two seasons with the side before making a move to the Browns, where he really made his name.

He scored 11 touchdowns during the 2010 campaign and two years later, was awarded a spot on the cover of popular game Madden NFL 12.

After one season with the Kansas City Chiefs, he failed to make an appearance during a brief stint with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Hillis ended his career with the New York Giants before retiring following a series of concussion incidents.

He later featured in 2021 horror movie The Hunting although it is unclear if he has since landed any other major roles.
