A teenager tragically died from traumatic injuries when he crashed off his skateboard and into a bollard at Center Parcs during a family holiday, an inquest heard today.

Alfie Richley had been on holiday with his family at the Woburn Forest Resort in Bedfordshire when the horrific accident happened, turning their getaway into a nightmare. He had been skateboarding on a path shortly before 4pm on Thursday 26 October when he fell onto the bollard. Alfie would die the same day in hospital.

During an inquest into his death, the Coroner’s office Ben Horrell said: "He sustained traumatic injuries to the abdomen. He was taken to Bedford South Wing Hospital. The injury proved fatal and he died the same day."

A post mortem examination by pathologist Dr Virginia Fitzpatrick-Swallow found that Alfie’s cause of death was traumatic abdominal injuries. Bedfordshire Senior Coroner Emma Whitting said a pre inquest review will be held on 21 February next year. She said: "I take this opportunity to send my condolences to Alfie’s family for their loss."

At the time, a Center Parcs spokesman said: "It is with great sadness that we confirm, following an incident at Center Parcs Woburn Forest, a guest tragically passed away last week. This is a distressing time and our thoughts are with their family and friends. At this time we are also supporting colleagues who assisted the emergency services and express our gratitude to both."

Yesterday, an inquest was also opened into the death of a Center Parcs worker at the same holiday resort. Penny Bulpitt, 67, a supervisor at Woburn Forest, was riding a push bike when she was struck by an electric buggy driven by another member of staff at ten past midday on Friday September 22nd this year.

Her inquest has been adjourned while the police investigate.
