New digital speed cameras have been installed on a busy route with new technology not relying on white lines painted on the road.
Staffordshire Police is upgrading 20 of the county's 254 fixed cameras with radar devices. The force hasn't said which cameras are included in the first phase, but the new cameras have two devices at the top of the pole. Stoke on Trent Live reports that the cameras being replaced are those which have been 'very effective in reducing road traffic collisions'.
The new devices can take 'high quality images' of any vehicles travelling above the speed limit which will then be automatically sent to the enforcement team. Funded by Staffordshire Safer Roads Partnership, these cameras use a radar to accurately measure the speed of a vehicle.
There's no need for white lines anymore as a 'secondary check' is carried out using a 'digitally applied line' on the offence images. Stoke-on-Trent now has 52 speed cameras, including the revamped ones in Sneyd Green and Baddeley Green.

The installation of the new technology will make it easier to check speeds across Staffordshire and we hope they will provide a visual reminder of the work we do every day to keep all road users as safe as possible."
