Princess Diana's close confidant Paul Burrell has revealed his fears for her sons Prince William and Prince Harry as The Crown returns for a new series.

In an exclusive interview with The Mirror US, the former royal butler thinks their mother’s death will be coming back to “haunt” them as it plays out in scenes for the hugely popular Netflix series. “William and Harry do not want to witness that again,” he exclusively tells The Mirror US. "It's a nightmare which keeps revolving and coming back to haunt them. So they don't want to see it. I'm surprised they're actually including it.”

The current series of The Crown depicts Burrell’s time at Kensington Palace with Diana, Charles, William and Harry. “I'm thinking, 'Please be faithful to the truth. And don't spin any untruths,” Burrell says. Burrell says the "macabre" scenes will “reopen wounds” for William and Harry, her beloved sons who were just 15 and 11 years old when their mother died, and “it's entertainment for entertainment's sake”.

Prince Harry has admitted to watching previous seasons of The Crown and enjoyed fact-checking the show. But Burrell doesn’t think he will rush to watch the new season.

“I don't think William and Harry will be watching it,” Burrell says. “I don't think they would want to watch it.”

The former royal butler believes Harry and William enjoyed the earlier seasons but their patience for the show will have dried up. “I think Harry and William watched Claire Foy, in their Granny's role all those years ago because that was interesting.”

But Burrell doesn’t think the princes will be entertained by Elizabeth Debicki’s portrayal of their late mother. “Diana was far more complex than an actress putting on a blonde wig,” Burrell says. “Diana was about much more than that. And you've got to go deep into Diana to understand her psyche and what she was about.”

Diana is being portrayed by Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki in the final series of The Crown and Burrell wants fans of the show to separate the fictional show from the historical events he witnessed. “I think the people that loved her have a duty to stand up and say, 'That's not true, or that's not right, or that's not fair,’” Burrell says.
