A heartbroken dad has paid tribute to his "amazing" son who died suddenly at university.

Alfie Head, who had been studying at University of Lincoln, died on Tuesday, November 14. The exact circumstances of his death are not yet known.

He is understood to have been 18 years old and a first-year student at the university, reports Lincolnshire Live. His family confirmed his passing yesterday in an emotional Facebook post, which told of how he had been "having the time of his life" while studying and "fought bravely" after being admitted to intensive care.

His father Mark Head wrote: "It is with a heavy heart that Clair [Head] and I have to say Alfie passed away peacefully today. He was the happiest we've ever seen him at Lincoln University and was having the time of his life. Getting a phone call at 1.30am saying your son was critically ill in the ICU [intensive care unit] is the hardest thing a parent will ever receive. He fought bravely but the odds were stacked against him. Sleep well son and we will meet again."

Tributes flooded in from hundreds of friends on social media, offering their condolences to the parents of to the "sweet" teen. One person wrote: "I'm so sorry for your loss. Alfie was a great friend and one of the nicest people I knew. He will be missed." Another said: "We are devastated to be reading this. Deepest sympathies to you and the boys on the loss of sweet Alfie."
