'My adopted mums say I owe them and should be their surrogate – I'm horrified'

There are lots of amazing, selfless women and people with uteruses who become surrogates for those who can’t have children naturally. And while it’s something a few of us might consider if the circumstances were right, it’s a huge thing to ask of someone and not a request to be taken lightly.

One woman has revealed how her own parents have told her they expect her to be a surrogate for them, arguing that she owes them because they have done “so much” for her. Taking to social media to ask if she was being unreasonable to deny their demand, the 24-year-old explained that her mums adopted her when she was 14.

She continued: “For context, my parents are both 67-year-old lesbians. I grew up close with them but they always talked about wanting another kid and once I reached the age of 21 they started pushing the idea [of surrogacy] on me, as a joke at first, for having their next kid.”

According to the woman, one of her mums has a criminal record and has spent time in prison, and in addition to their ages, no adoption centres would allow them to take on another child. This has left them feeling like surrogacy was their only option.

“I never found those jokes funny and always said no since they made me very uncomfortable,” she went on. “Last week they called me to come over for dinner. I accepted since I haven't seen them for 7 months.”

However, once she arrived their true intentions became clear when they started dropping major hints about having children by showing her baby clothes they’d bought and reminiscing on her own baby pictures.

She continued: “They began saying how badly they want one. I laughed it off. They then sat me down and said ‘I want you to have our next kid we already have a donor and we cannot conceive anymore due to our age we would pay completely’.”

Horrified, their daughter flat-out refused their surrogate plea and told them she was disgusted by their request, calling it “gross”. She finished: “As I left they were calling and yelling at me saying I was in the wrong and they did so much for me.”

Naturally, after reading the post on Reddit people were horrified by the entitlement of the 24-year-old’s parents and rushed to sympathise with her. One person wrote: You’re not the a**hole. This is gross, imagine trying to inseminate your daughter.”

Another added they also felt how old the parents were was wrong, adding: “Also grossly selfish to want a baby at their ages! Won't traumatize the kid at all to have both parents pass before they reach adulthood. And you would probably be expected to finish raising them!” While someone else penned: “I read the title as some sort of reference to babysitting, and now I have to go bleach my brain.”
