A "depraved, evil" paedophile raped a little girl "hundreds of times" before sexually assaulting and murdering a pregnant woman while working as a doctor in Australia.

Michael McGrane, 62, first groomed the young girl with sweets and presents while abusing her in Liverpool. Later, he qualified as a doctor and relocated to Brisbane, Australia. While there, he drugged and molested a number of his female patients. One of the patients was seven months pregnant at the time and reported the monster's attack to the Australian Health Rights Commission. Just two months later, she was found dead at her flat after McGrane administered a lethal dose of morphine.

McGrane was jailed for life four years after the murder in 2001 and was handed a life sentence. Two years later he admitted the sexual abuse of nine more women, at least four of them who he drugged. Shockingly, he was released from jail and deported back to the UK just 10 years after being jailed.

At the end of last year, he was back in court after being found with almost 1,600 indecent images of children. The monster is back where he belongs behind bars after he was found guilty of rape, buggery and indecent assault in Liverpool last month, the ECHO reports.

At his sentencing at Liverpool Crown Court today, prosecutor Frances Wilmott said: "The victim recalled him stripping her down and touching her sexually until she became accustomed to it. She was so young when the abuse started that it was as if it had always happened."

McGrane, of Victoria Street in Southport, began by sexually assaulting the girl before moving on to raping her "on a regular basis". The girl tried to tell a school teacher what was going on, but was "put in a darkened room" and "told to keep her mouth shut".

The victim, now an adult, said: "This man has taken my childhood and stolen my innocence. Instead of being a determined, strong minded child I was a frightened silent guilt-ridden child. As a young woman I could not award an ounce of trust to any human being."

She added: "After seeing McGrane continued his sexual abuse of woman, after seeing him imprisoned in Australia, and seeing after 13 years in jail he still could not control his urges, it made me realise I had to speak out. I couldn't let this man walk free in the city, knowing what he was capable of. It was my responsibility to stop this abuse happening. No child should be stripped of their innocence."
