Ricky Hatton’s mum Carol has opened up on the ongoing “hurt” and “upset” she faces after opening up a fresh feud with her son.

The family have experienced a fresh breakdown in their relationship ever since the recent broadcast of a documentary about the former world champion boxer's life. Carol and husband Ray took part in the programme by supplying old videos of Hatton’s childhood on Hattersley council estate in Hyde, Greater Manchester.

However, they have been left hurt by the final edit which includes allegations made by Hatton's former trainer Billy Graham, who accused Ray of short-changing him over fight purses. Speaking through a letter she wrote with Mail Online, who claim the couple feel 'betrayed' by the documentary, Carol, 70 said: “I must've rewrote this letter, changed it time and time again, not wanting anyone to think that I was slating my son. Every time I read it, I still get upset because I'm hurting.

“Me and Ray are on our last lap. Nobody knows what's around the corner. How would he feel if anything happened to either of us? There's an old saying, ‘If he can't come see me when I'm alive, don't come when I'm dead with your tears’.

“I'm on meds, Sertraline that's for anxiety. And I've been asking friends for Diazepam. They've said, ‘Why?’. I said, ‘Oh, it's just for somebody I know’ or ‘I just need to it to feel a little bit more chilled’.”

Carol further detailed that she has not heard from her son since the beginning of May. Her attempts to get in touch with him have proven futile having sent texts, called and posted a letter to the former boxer.

The relationship between them broke down previously and lasted nine years until they mended their feud in 2019. It has since broke down again in May when Ray and Carol were on holiday in Tenerife. A call out of the blue from Ricky saw him invite his Dad to watch Manchester City in the Champions League - an invitation that was declined due to the “innuendos” in the documentary.

Ray claims he told his son: "Richard, I will always love you, have done from the day you were born, but unfortunately I can't go through this again.” Within minutes, Ricky had unfollowed both of his parents on Instagram.

Speaking directly about the allegations in the documentary, Carol added: “I thought the first half [of the documentary] was OK, but then you have to know the real story behind it. The documentary's second half was directed at the allegations made against (Ray) by (Graham) regarding money missing.

“I think the remark that really upset me, as his mum, was when somebody asks him, ‘And how much are we talking about?’ in terms of money that allegedly went missing and Richard [Ricky] turns around and says, ‘Millions’.

“Anybody who knows me also knows if I'd have thought for one minute any of the alleged missing money had been true, trust me there would've been no way I'd have been writing this letter supporting Ray.”

The fresh fall-out has left Carol questioning herself. After a previous dispute over money in 2012, the two parties had made amends. Amid Hatton’s ongoing battle with mental health, Carol had chosen to go up on stage to hug her son.

But now she has been left to question whether the exchange was “genuine” and is baffled as to how Hatton can “do this to us all over again”. It has even gone as far as making her question her ability as a mother.

“I look in the mirror and think, ‘What did you do Carol, where did you go wrong?’,” she admitted. “I've had to realise it was nothing that I did as a mum.”

“I try to tell myself everyday ‘Carol, you're a good person, a good family person, you've been a good mum, don't ever, ever forget that’.”

Mirror Sport has contacted Ricky's representatives for comment.
