A senior Conservative donor and figure has expressed sympathy for disgraced Tory MP Peter Bone.

Property mogul Charles McDowell, who is a member of the Party’s Treasurer Committee, tweeted that he “feel[s] sorry for Peter Bone”, adding that it “is beyond imagination” that anyone could feel bullied by him.

Mr Bone is suspended and faces expulsion from the House of Commons after he was found to have “trapped” a member of staff in his hotel room and exposing himself.

An investigation by Parliamentary authorities found it was a “deliberate and conscious abuse of power.”

He was also found guilty of ‘humiliating’ staff, including throwing things at his employees, and verbally abusing those that worked for him.

A recall petition is underway in his Wellingborough constituency, which could lead to him being ousted from the seat.

Mr McDowell is the second senior Tory to back Mr Bone in recent weeks.

It comes after the Sunday Mirror photographed Tory Minister Tom Pursglove campaigning with Mr Bone just two days after MPs voted to suspend him.

A Labour Spokesperson said: “The only people McDowell should be feeling sorry for are Peter Bone’s victims and his constituents of Wellingborough.

“The people of Wellingborough deserve better than Peter Bone and the Conservative government he has backed for the last 13 years.

“Only Labour can offer the change that Wellingborough and Britain needs, Peter Bone should resign immediately and put an end to this farce.”
