Prince William and Kate Middleton have updated their social media feeds for the most solemn occasion on the British calendar.

The Prince and Princess of Wales updated their profiles ahead of Remembrance Day on Saturday 11 November, which honours all those from UK and Commonwealth nations who were killed across multiple wars. British royals always switch up their social media pages in order to better reflect the tone of the day.

William and Kate have put up a new profile photo - a picture of them attending the 2019 Festival of Remembrance, an event held annually at the Royal Albert Hall to commemorate all those who lost their lives. They wore all-black with red poppy pins.

The poppy, used since 1921 for commemorating war heroes - is largely associated among the UK and Commonwealth countries with Remembrance Day, as a symbol of sacrifice. It becomes a staple of the royal wardrobe each November.

The Prince and Princess of Wales also have a new cover photo on X showing the Field of Remembrance, with poppies on crosses. They used the same cover photo for Remembrance Day last year, and this year swapped it in for a photo of the Earthshot Prize finalists. Previously, their social media channels showed a picture of the pair laughing while on a trip to Ireland in 2020 as their profile picture.

Other royals have also switched up their pages as is tradition, with King Charles and Queen Camilla adjusting their profile picture from a coronation picture to a throwback from a past Remembrance Day. It shows the King and Queen Consort at a Remembrance Day Service at the National War Memorial in Ottawa, Canada, in 2009, People reported.

Their cover picture on X and Facebook was also changed to a huge array of red ceramic poppies along with the phrase “Lest We Forget”. It comes from a famous poppy installation from 2014, which filled the entire moat in the Tower of London with 888,246 flowers to represent each British military fatality during the war, according to the Historic Royal Palaces.

Their previous profile picture showed a shot of the newly-crowned couple looking out at the crowds from the Buckingham Palace Balcony. Before that, it showed the Mall in London packed out with royalists waving Union Jack flags.

The royals will attend Remembrance Day at the Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance at Royal Albert Hall today (Saturday 11 November). They are also expected to be at the National Service of Remembrance at the Cenotaph memorial in London.
