Trying to fall asleep can be frustrating, especially when you find yourself tossing and turning all night to get yourself into a comfortable position - but did you know the way you sleep can actually determine your personality type and traits?

Whether you sleep on your stomach, flat on your back or hugging a pillow, our positions can say a lot about how we handle different situations. If you wonder why you always find yourself curled up like a baby or why you always drift off when on your side - sleep expert Samuel Dunkell has revealed what it really means.

During the study, Samuel explored connections between people's chosen position and their traits, and one particular position reveals you have an assertive personality, as revealed in his book titled 'Sleep Positions: The Night Language of the Body.'

Firstly, the study found that people who sleep on their backs reveal they are focused, silent and strong individuals. They will tend to avoid conflicts and fuss and will always speak the truth. Samuel also discovered they are "highly optimistic and live life to the fullest". However, they also love to "be the centre of attention". These sleepers also don't "engage in petty gossip" and will take time to prioritise themselves for "self-growth and mental recharge".

Next up, those who opt for the fetal position and curl up like a baby are said to have a "tough" exterior but are a lot more sensitive and shy on the inside. More introverted, these people tend to be more creative in their way of expressing themselves. They can show traits of anxiousness and a feeling of being overwhelmed in situations - and "feel most at ease" around family and close friends. Samuel also found that these people are "usually closed off to new experiences. They may be fearful of being abandoned or left out."

If you sleep on your stomach, it means you are "strong-willed" an "adventurer" and a "risk-taker". Sleeping on your stomach shows these people are straight to the point but can come across as a little harsh - but deep down can feel nervous or anxious - as they like to be in "control". Samuel also said: "People sleeping on their stomachs can also be impulsive, inhibit insecurities, or lack confidence. However, they are good at hiding any negative emotions," reports Jagran Josh.

One of the most popular positions, those who sleep on their side show traits of an "easygoing and social" person. The type that will be at ease starting a conversation with anyone in the room. A trusting individual, it can make it seem like they can be "persuaded easily" but deep down they take everything into consideration, and can "be quite slow at making decisions."

These four sleeping positions can be broken down into:
