U2 fans have their 'minds blown' as music legends launch Las Vegas residency

Irish rockers U2 announced their residency in Las Vegas weeks ago and their fans have been nothing but excited ever since, announcing that the venue is "the next level of arena entertainment."

The band was the debut performer, and the debut residency, at the Sphere on September 29. The residency is titled U2:UV Achtung Baby Live at Sphere and is their first live performance in four years. The venue holds 18,000 fans in a sphere-shaped arena with a 160,000-square-foot wraparound LED display that holds the record as the world's largest LED screen.

The Sphere is marketed on its website as "a next-generation entertainment medium" and "creates extraordinary experiences" for fans. But it seems like the venue isn't marketing false advertising, as fans have taken to social media to share videos and photos about their U2 residency experience.

"This is the next level of arena entertainment. It is something you just have to experience. U2 put on an amazing, one of a kind show," someone wrote on Twitter.

Another fan posted a video on the social media site of the band performing their 1987 song Where The Streets Have No Name. They captioned it: "I’m literally crying watching my videos back from the sphere. It was beyond perfect and allowed me to experience one of my favourite bands in a way that I didn’t even know was imaginable. If you literally only like one U2 song, just go to the Sphere. Your mind will be blown."

U2 first announced their residency on Valentine's Day 2023 with five days planned in September and October. As demand for tickets rose, a week more of shows were added for October. By May, the residency was extended until December.

Word got around about the intensity of the shows and the "unbelievable" experience fans have, and almost three weeks after their debut show the residency was extended into February 2024. There's no telling if the show will continue to be extended, but rumour has it that Harry Styles has been offered an official invite for a residency show there at some point next year.

Other concert goers have said that attending a show at the Sphere "ruined" other concert venues. "U2’s show at the Sphere is, without a doubt, the greatest audio/visual event I’ve ever experienced," one person said on social media, "It’s just a perfect combination of over-the-top and immersive imagery and a band that does not seem ready to slow down. This show may have forever ruined me for other concerts."
