Rory McIlroy has confirmed he will represent Boston Common in the inaugural TGL season, the league founded by the Northern Irishman and his business partner and fellow player Tiger Woods.

McIlroy took to social media on Thursday afternoon to announce he would represent the Boston setup, one of six teams competing in TGL's first campaign. The four-time major winner's three teammates were also revealed, with Adam Scott, Keegan Bradley and Tyrrell Hatton all representing Boston.

Having founded the innovative golf league, the Northern Irishman is unsurprisingly eager to get going with his new team, whilst looking forward to competing alongside Scott, Bradley and Ryder Cup teammate Hatton. In a statement, McIlroy said: "I’m thrilled to join Boston Common Golf and to be representing Boston and New England’s rich sports culture. TGL brings a unique dimension to the game, and I can’t wait to stand with Adam, Keegan, and Tyrrell as my teammates.

"It’s a fantastic opportunity that will offer us all a chance to build lasting connections and to foster regional pride that you don’t often see in the game of golf.” McIlroy's Boston team is ran by Fenway Sports Group, who have ownership in Premier League football club Liverpool, as well as Boston baseball giants, the Boston Red Sox.

The man in charge, John Henry welcomed his four new players in a glowing statement to the PGA Tour stars. "These four remarkable golfers have achieved an extraordinary list of accolades as individuals," Henry said. "Together as a group, they convey an unmistakable sense of exceptionalism that not only commands respect but also instills a profound sense of awe, especially among their competitors

“Rory, Tyrrell, Keegan, and Adam stand at the very heart of our team’s potential for success in this groundbreaking venture and we extend our gratitude to each of them for embarking on this journey with us." McIlroy's move came just hours after TGL were issued a hammer blow by one of its biggest names Jon Rahm.

On Thursday morning it was confirmed that Rahm had opted to quit the league just two months before the launch, having been initially announced 12 months ago. After the decision was confirmed in a statement obtained by Mirror Sport by TGL, Rahm himself took to social media to explain his decision.

"I am sad to confirm that I will not be participating in the first TGL season," the Masters champion tweeted. "While I still think it’s a great opportunity, right now it would require a level of commitment that I can’t offer. Best of luck to everyone involved and may the best team win!"

The loss of Rahm is a big one for McIlroy, who co-founded the league alongside 82-time PGA Tour winner Woods. In a statement TGL did confirm they were now on the hunt for a replacement for Rahm, that would be announced 'soon'. The stadium-based league had originally signed off its roster last month, following the addition of Patrick Cantlay, Lucas Glover, Min Woo Lee, Wyndham Clark and Kevin Kisner.
