A Canadian couple welcomed a large baby weighing over 14 pounds last week - and said they never thought in their “wildest dreams” he would be so big.

Sonny Ayres was born through a caesarean section at Cambridge Memorial Hospital, Ontario, to mother Britteney and father Chance who are having their fifth child. The size of their newborn youngest was “absolutely” a surprise, Chance told ‘Good Morning America’. “Never in our wildest dreams did we think he'd be that big.”

Sonny isn’t the first large baby Britteney has given birth to - despite being the biggest at 14 pounds 8 ounces and 55 centimetres long. Two of Sonny’s older siblings weighed over 13 pounds and were also born via C-section. "[Marigold] was born 13 pounds, 14 ounces. And Lucky, he was born 13 pounds, 11 ounces," Britteney said. It is significantly larger than the average which is around 9 pounds, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Britteney’s pregnancy with Sonny was complication-free, and the newborn has now gone home to meetup with his four older siblings: Chance, 6, Everett, 5, Lucky, 3, and Marigold, 1. Sonny’s one-week early birth has been a “blessing”, Britteney says, adding: "I'm taking it day by day but I'm just really happy to be home and have a good support system.”

"Nana and Papa are here helping out with the other littles and we're just really excited to be home. It's a blessing. The doctor asked us if we joked around, he said, 'Well, we just make big babies’. Chance is very tall. He's 6 [feet], 2 [inches]. My dad's tall so it runs in the family," Britteney explained.

Obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr Asa Ahimbisibwe told ‘Good Morning America’ that Sonny was the biggest baby he has ever delivered and the hospital’s biggest baby since 2010. There’s no chance of the Ayres breaking their own record - as they say Sonny will be their last.

"He's our last one ... a ray of sunshine. He's beautiful," Chance said. "Anyone that sees them has an enormous smile, even if they don't recognize [him] from the news. They still see him and say, 'Wow, what a baby that is.'"
