There's many a sporting legend been made in this gorgeous seaside town and it's had its fair share of stars gracing the picturesque streets for filming and taking in the tees – but there's more to Troon than golf or popular TV shows.

Situated on the west coast of Ayrshire and boasting stunning sandy beaches with views overlooking Ailsa Craig and the Isle of Arran, this Scottish town made world famous by The Open Championship played at Royal Troon – it hosted the world-famous event in July this year, 100 years after it did so for the first time – and latterly as the site of some particularly emotional scenes filmed for Outlander at its beach.

Troon still retains the old seaside charm whilst offering modern facilities for the visitor. Golfers are, of course, spoilt for choice with seven courses to suit every budget, but the town has so much more to offer than just carefully manicured fairways. There are great hotels, restaurants, festivals and more.

If you're an Outlander fan Troon will probably look familiar to those who have watched the historical drama series, as all the way back at the end of the first season, main characters Jamie, Claire, and Murtagh depart Scotland and set sail for France from here. If you want to head to the very same spot where the ending took place look no further than the long stretches of sands and incomparable views out across to the Isle of Arran.

After a healthy long walk along the beach taking in the fresh sea air – either south towards Prestwick, north towards Irvine or you can take the Smugglers Trail which goes over the hill to historic Dundonald Castle – the historic pride and joy of Ayrshire is a must-see when visiting Troon, with its barrel-vaulted ceilings and the Castle Team's tales of the site’s 3500-year-old past – it's likely you've worked up quite an appetite.

But fear not, there are many nearby fish and chip shops, bars, restaurants and ice cream parlours that are sure to have what you're craving. The town also has a bustling fish market, a monthly street market and is home to a number of independent shops.

Sitting on the Firth of Clyde, Troon Yacht Haven offers fantastic facilities for sailing enthusiasts, there's a superb marina and berthing facilities at the harbour, a vibrant live music venue in the Concert Hall and both north and south beaches are well used by wind and kite surfers. Alternatively you can just stroll around and you may just lose track of time.

Good for kids is the amazing Fullarton Fairy Trail, situated just outside Troon centre in some magical woodlands. This is an excellent place for families to spend an afternoon wandering, with its curious attractions such as carved fairy doors, hanging wind chimes and cute fairies.

There is easy access to the rest of the attractions in Ayrshire with a choice of accommodation, including the five star luxury of the Marine Hotel. This spectacular spa break location has a sauna, steam room, jacuzzi, spas, and beauty treatments and once you have chilled out, you can enjoy the tranquil views of Troon Harbour and its beaches while lying by the pool. There are also many top-quality B&Bs to choose from.

With two stations, Troon and Barassie, and two services per hour to and from Glasgow and Ayr, it is easy to reach by train and by car. The town is no more than 40 minutes from the centre of Glasgow while Prestwick Airport is only a couple of miles away and an hour and a half from Edinburgh. So, whether you're looking for a local day out shopping, a weekend short break, a live music festival or an activity holiday there is something for everyone in and around Troon.
