DeAndre Hopkins appears set to stay at the Tennessee Titans as his hopes of a trade to a Super Bowl contender appear to be fading as the deadline closes in.

Earlier this year, Hopkins became a free agent when the Arizona Cardinals sensationally released him in late May. While the Cardinals wanted compensation in a trade package for Hopkins, they received no worthwhile offers and decided to completely sever their ties with the five-time Pro Bowler ahead of the 2023 season.

Hopkins is renowned for his incredible catching ability in clutch moments, and his availability garnered attention from franchises around the NFL. The former Clemson star had spoken of his desire to win a ring and play with a league-leading quarterback.

Hopkins then signed a two-year deal worth up to $32 million (£26.4m) with the Titans as Tennessee needed a star to lead their receiving corps. Hopkins’ ability to win contested catches and create separation were expected to give the Titans a reliable target in crucial situations.

Last season, the Titans relied heavily on their rushing attack, led by the formidable duo of superstar running back Derrick Henry and a solid offensive line. The passing game left plenty to be desired, though, and it meant opposing defences could focus on containing Henry.

The Titans were in desperate need of a true number one receiving weapon, after lingering in the playoff picture over the last few years without being able to get over the hump. With Hopkins in the mix, Tennessee were expected to keep defenders on their toes with a more balanced offensive scheme.

However, the 31-year-old has failed to consistently put up numbers given the Titans’ offensive struggles and is yet to score a touchdown. Aside from his explosion for 140 yards against the Indianapolis Colts, Hopkins has stayed fairly quiet. Unfortunately for him, it doesn’t seem like he is going anywhere either.

According to The Athletic, Hopkins and Henry are set to stay in Tennessee. Teams have reportedly called general manager Ryan Carthon regarding several players - but Carthon will not shift any stars unless the offer is exceptional ahead of next week’s NFL trade deadline.

It seems Hopkins is not going to be able to play alongside a leading quarterback. While Ryan Tannehill is a solid veteran, he is injured with rookie Will Levis and sophomore Malik Willis set to play in Week 8.

In 2023, Hopkins has hauled in 27 receptions for 376 yards - and zero touchdowns. He looks set to remain with the AFC South franchise for at least the remainder of the season, so perhaps he strikes a positive relationship with Willis or Levis. Hopkins’ Titans take on the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday October 28.
