Cooking and food shopping are Brits' least favourite chores - after a holiday

The post-holiday glow lasts just four-and-a-half days after returning home, research has found.

A poll of 2,000 travellers found 22% feel a sense of happiness when they arrive through their front door, and more than a third (36%) admit things which annoyed them prior to their trip, no longer bother them.

However, two-thirds (68%) say this feeling soon fades when faced with the prospect of household chores, going back to work – and having to cook dinner again.

Cooking is a particular frustration for 19%, who claim this is the chore they hate most – having been spoiled with a host of culinary delights during their getaway.

The study was commissioned by Dr. Oetker Ristorante, which cheered-up returning holidaymakers at Liverpool John Lennon Airport, by loading baggage carousels with freezer bags of frozen pizza – to save them doing a food shop on the drive home.

The special treat came after the research found one in four (24%) dislike having to buy groceries on the way back from their holiday.

Laura Robinson, spokeswoman for Dr. Oetker Ristorante, said: “The worst thing about holidays is they have to come to an end – and once they do, reality soon hits. Unpacking, tidying the house, coming home to an empty fridge – none of these things are appealing prospects.

“That's why we wanted to bring a taste of Italian sunshine to the arrivals hall this half-term, and help holidaymakers to prolong their holiday with our delicious, Italian-inspired pizzas waiting for them when they landed.”

The survey, carried out through OnePoll, also identified the things those polled miss most when they return home from a holiday.

More than a quarter (26%) admit they long to have someone to cook for them again, like they did when they were enjoying their vacation. And 26% miss the sunny weather, while 21% miss the sense of inner peace they developed during their getaway.
