A man has been lucky enough to bag £8,000 a month for the next ten years after stopping at a local shop to buy a scratchcard.

Randy Whitney bought a ‘Decade of Dollars’ ticket for just $5 (£4.10) - and it turned out to be a life-changing investment. Whitney – who comes from the town of Spencer, Massachusetts, US – collected his cheque at the lottery headquarters on 16 October.

He had the option of receiving a one-time payment of $780,000 (£642,228) before taxes or $10,000 (£8,234) a month for a decade, totalling $1.2 million (£988,044) before taxes.

Whitney chose to receive the jackpot in the annuity form and received his first payment of $120,000 (£98,782) last week, according to the Massachusetts Lottery.

Now he will receive monthly payments of $10,000 for the next nine years starting in October 2024. Whitney bought his winning ticket at the Spencer Xpress Mart on Main Street, in his hometown. The shop will receive a $12,000 (£9,877) bonus for selling the winning ticket.

Earlier this month, a great-grandmother scooped a cool million on the lottery just five days after retiring. Susan Maxwell collected her jackpot from the Massachusetts Lottery headquarters on 6 October.

Maxwell – who comes from Arlington – won $1 million (£825,830) on a ‘$15,000,000 Money Maker’ scratchcard. She chose to receive her windfall in the form of a one-time payment and took home $650,000 (£535,158) before taxes.

She bought her winning ticket at Arlington Convenience on Massachusetts Avenue in her hometown. Meanwhile, a lottery winner who raked in a huge $1million had her life changed forever - but not in a good way.

Lynne Ann Poirier’s huge winnings in Orlando, Florida, led to a nine-year legal battle with her ex-boyfriend which would ultimately see her file for bankruptcy. The schoolteacher was sued by Howard Browning only months after she had cashed in her colossal cheque in 2007.

Browning accused Poirier of going against her word after she promised she would split any potential winnings between them. He showed the court a receipt from an ATM - which he says proved he bought the winning ticket.

Throughout the legal battle Poirier insisted they were broken up by the time she had bought the tickets, claiming she had bought the ticket herself.

She denied ever making a deal with Browning that they would share the winnings between them.

The ATM receipt which Browning claimed proves he paid for the lottery tickets showed that he withdrew several hundred dollars out of his bank account - allegedly just before he bought the slips.

Poirier’s account of events was different, stating they had run into each other in a gas station and bought the tickets separately.
