They’re not the first celebrity couple to be rocked by cheating allegations but now a new three part documentary Coleen Rooney: The Real Wagatha Story is coming to Disney+ today will focus on the courtroom scandal that gripped a nation and shine a new light on Wayne’s alleged cheating.
Childhood sweethearts, the couple have been dating since they were just 12 but their marriage hit the rocks in 2017 when reporters uncovered the former footballer had been pulled over behind the wheel of another woman's car and was three times over the drink drive limit.
Wayne Rooney met Laura Simpson at a bar before joining her for a drive in her VW Beetle - but it wasn’t the only time he has been caught with another woman. During the documentary, Coleen says: “I've had that feeling in my stomach a few times and I would never wish anyone to feel that. You do think, do I actually know this person, when things like that happen. Y'know, You're not the person I married and the person I want you to be.”
Wayne began paying visits to prostitutes when he was just 16. One of the sex workers he allegedly visited was , known as Auld Slapper. In 2002, he allegedly enjoyed paid-for sessions with Gina McCarrick at a brothel in Liverpool and Charlotte Glover but Coleen forgave Wayne for the incidents which later came to light in 2004.
In 2010, it was revealed Rooney had allegedly visited prostitutes when Coleen was pregnant with their first child. He met with Jennifer Thompson seven times and was exposed for allegedly having a threesome with her and Helen Wood. Then after moving to the States in 2019, he was spotted partying with girls but there was nothing to suggest he had cheated on his wife on these occasions.
Greggs, Costa & Pret coffees have 'huge differences in caffeine', says reportNoor Hibbert, Leading Celebrity Transformation Coach, told the Mirror she genuinely believes Wayne and Coleen love each other, but that "No-one teaches us how to navigate the complexities of all the emotions when it comes to relationships, cheating and marriage.”
And rather than seeing Coleen as a pushover, the relationship expert says she is a ‘very strong woman’ who is ‘trying to do the best for her family.’ The question of why people cheat in relationships is a complex one, she adds. “Without speaking to Wayne directly to explore this, it's difficult to make conclusions. However, there are some common themes and factors that contribute to people cheating, such as emotionally feeling disconnected, dissatisfaction and sexual fulfilment.”
While Noor doesn’t justify Wayne’s actions, she does say the reality is the ex footballer has been with Coleen from a very young age. This means he will have lacked the life experience and wisdom to really understand the impact of how cheating affects people. “Wayne would have received a lot of female attention because of his status as a footballer,” Noor adds. “If prior to him being a footballer he hadn't received this attention, it would have been a hugely novel experience to suddenly be at the forefront of people's attention and have women literally throwing themselves at him.”
Wayne is believed to have undergone two hair transplants to combat thinning, and sex and relationships expert Jessica Leoni believes it could be linked to his cheating. Speaking on behalf of Illicitencounters.com, she told The Mirror that hair loss has a big impact on male confidence and self-esteem, which is turn makes them more susceptible to welcoming attention from the opposite sex.
"They see this as an opportunity to restore some of that inner belief. It's opportunistic at best, but it can be perceived as a big confidence boost," she said.
"With global fame and all the money in the world, attracting women wouldn't have been an issue for Wayne Rooney - but there's no doubt enjoying the extra attention from females would have helped heal his inner struggle with a receding hairline.
"Ultimately, men facing the challenge of hair thinning may be drawn to external validation, making them more susceptible to the temptation of infidelity."
Psychologists believe people can change if they fully understand the reasons they are cheating.
“We are driven by unconscious drivers that are below the surface of our own awareness. so it's important to address these, especially if someone is a serial offender as this is often indicative of a deeper-rooted issue rather than a one-off mistake,” Noor explains.. “I truly believe a leopard can change his spots but only if they're willing to understand what is happening below the surface that is causing the behaviour.
“There's no point in someone saying they are sorry and that it is wrong, if they don't actually know how to change their own behaviour. This is why getting the right help is crucial and paramount to avoid it happening again.”
