A British fugitive who beat a tourist to death in Spain is being jailed, eight years after the killing.

Ross Moore, 38, got into an argument with a German holidaymaker during a late-night session at an expat pub on the Costa del Sol in July 2015. He punched Ingo Dewitz, 46, three times in the face at the Captain’s Bar near Fuengirola, causing him to collapse and die. In 2020, he was sentenced to 14 months in prison for manslaughter.

This was suspended when he agreed to pay £130,000 to the victim’s family and the court within two years. But when Moore failed to pay up, Spain issued an arrest warrant and

officers detained him at his flat in Colchester, Essex, in April. This month, a judge sitting at Westminster magistrates court described him as a fugitive and ordered him back to Spain to serve his sentence.

Builder Moore, who has two children, now faces 351 days in prison. He fought the extradition request, saying the German’s death was an accident. In a statement, he added: “He died in my arms. I got scared and ran. I was simply trying to do the right things and stand up for another person as the victim was causing trouble.”

Moore also said he had received death threats from Spanish and Portuguese gangs since the killing, but the London court dismissed this claim as lacking evidence. District judge Sarah-Jane Griffiths dismissed Moore’s health and safety concerns over being extradited. In her judgment, she wrote: “There is a strong public interest in this country complying with its international extradition treaty obligations.

“[Moore’s] extradition is sought in relation to a serious allegation, namely manslaughter. I am satisfied to the necessary standard that there are no bars to this extradition request.”
