A three-year-old girl is fighting for her life after falling from a car and being hit by a van outside a McDonald's.

A woman, aged 37, has been arrested for drug driving and child protection related offences following the incident at a retail park in Wirral, Merseyside, yesterday afternoon. It's understood the child fell from a Nissan Qashqai before being struck by the oncoming transit van.

Merseyside Police were called to Croft Retail Park in Bromborough, Wirral, at around 4.10pm. The patient was taken to hospital having suffered serious injuries and is in a critical condition, but remains stable at this time, police have confirmed. The driver of the transit van stopped at the scene and is assisting police with the investigation.

A 37-year-old woman from Leasowe has been arrested on suspicion of drug driving and child protection related offences and will be interviewed by officers.

A spokesperson from Merseyside Police said: "Officers from Merseyside Police Roads Policing Unit have arrested a 37-year-old woman from Leasowe following a serious road traffic collision in Wirral. The incident happened on Welton Road, Bromborough, near to McDonalds at about 4.10pm, when a silver van has collided with a three year old child who had exited from a Nissan Qashqai.

"The child was taken to hospital having sustained serious injuries, and she remains critical but stable. The driver of the transit van stopped at the scene and he is assisting police with the investigation. The woman was arrested for drug driving and child protection related offences and will be interviewed by officers."

Officers from the Roads Policing team carried out examinations at the scene and anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has any dashcam footage which could help with inquiries, is asked to contact the police.
