Wayne Rooney could have some making-up to do with Tom Brady following his appointment as the new Birmingham manager - after previously slamming NFL.

The former Manchester United forward left his role at MLS side DC United last week but has not been out of work for long. He has been named as the new manager of Championship side Birmingham City following the controversial decision to sack John Eustace.

He has signed a three-and-a-half deal with the club. Rooney will hope to keep the Midlands side on track after their promising start to the season - with the Blues sitting sixth in the table heading into the October international break.

After being formally announced, he might be worried about an awkward reunion with stakeholder Brady. The former New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers star invested in Birmingham back in August.

Speaking at the time, he said: “Birmingham City is an iconic club with so much history and passion and to be part of the Blues is a real honour for me. BCFC is built on teamwork and determination and I’m excited to work alongside the board, management and players to make our Second City club second to none.

“I’ve been part of some amazing teams in my day, and I’m looking forward to applying my perspective to create that same success here in Birmingham.”

But Rooney has previously revealed that he wasn’t a big fan of the NFL during Brady’s playing days. Taking to Twitter in 2012 while watching that season's Super Bowl, he wrote: "Trying to watch super bowl final. How do they call this football. Like watching paint dry. Looking forward to adverts and music".

Brady was actually in action that day as his New England side lost out to the New York Giants in Indiana. Rooney then followed that up with another tweet. He wrote: "Seen more of guys in studio than the players at super bowl. Zzzzzzzz hurry up music.”
