Kate Lawler shuts down Big Brother critics as she praises 'fantastic' series

Kate Lawler said she was a huge fan of the new Big Brother as she hit back at people who called the new series 'woke'.

The star, who was the first female winner of the original series in 2002, watched the new series with a 'smile on her face'. Big Brother returned to our screens on Sunday evening after a five-year hiatus and promised to bring the drama as the new housemates entered their new home for the next 42 days.

This year's line-up includes mostly people in their 20s but it is one of the programme's most diverse seasons yet. Housemates include a Muslim make-up artist, an amputee DJ, a Miss Universe star and many more. As with many programmes, trolls came out of the woodwork to complain about the diversity and claimed the show was 'ticking boxes'.

Kate rushed to defend the show during an appearance on Monday's This Morning. She said: "I absolutely loved last night show. ITV have got their hands on the ultimate reality show. The OG Big Brother. I watched it with a smile on my face. The length of breadth of the country is being celebrated.

"It's the most diverse housemates yet. Gay, straight, a woman with MS, a man who has lost his foot. I think it's gonna make some really great viewing. I was highly entertained. It's predominantly young housemates but it's my favourite so far." She also agreed with ITV's decision to pre-record the show.

"Gone are the launch nights which were three hours long, which I think makes for better viewing," Kate explained. "We have shorter attention spans now. It was snappy it was sharp." She also praised new hosts AJ Odudu and Will Best, saying: "What a great duo AJ and Will are - 10 out of 10! That catsuit was trending on X. She looked phenomenal. I think we're in for a fantastic series. Series 20 is not gonna disappoint."

While watching the show, people had criticisms about many aspects of the show including the colour of the house, the fact it was pre-recorded and the number of young people cast.

"Great to see normal contestants rather than ‘influencers’ etc - but it feels flat, the colours of the house have given me a headache," one person wrote. "It's a frantic, rushed, hastily edited, pre-recorded pile in of HM’s," one frustrated person wrote, while another slammed it as "too rushed and over edited with it being pre-recorded."

"It’s awful. I can’t believe it… there’s no life. Pre-recorded, rushed, there’s no commentary as they walk from the car, the big brother voice is wrong," one particularly dismayed fan commented.
