A woman was rescued from the third floor of a burning building in the early hours of New Year's Day.

Some 80 firefighters and 12 fire engines scrambled to the scene and tackled the fire shortly after 3am.

Three women had been able to escape the blaze on the third floor before emergency crews arrived, but the fourth became trapped on a balcony.

Photographs show firefighters resting a ladder against the apartment block and climbing up to the third floor to bring her to safety.

Crew members said she was suffering from smoke inhalation and was taken to hospital in an ambulance, reports My London.

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) was called to the fire in Acton, West London, at 3.19am and had it under control just over an hour later.

Part of the third-floor flat was damaged in the blaze that saw firefighters use extendable ladders to access the balcony.

The cause of the fire is now under investigation by specialist officers from the LFB.

A spokesperson for the brigade said: "Part of a third floor flat was damaged by the blaze.

"The Brigade’s 999 control officers gave vital fire survival guidance to residents before firefighters arrived.

"A woman was rescued by fire crews from a third floor balcony. She was suffering from smoke inhalation and taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews.

"A further three women left the affected flat before the Brigade arrived."

Around 20 people self evacuated the block of flats while a number of other residents remained in their unaffected flats.
