A British woman died hours after a "series of complications" during cosmetic surgery in Majorca.

Local reports say a court on the island is investigating the death at Son Espases Hospital in Palma. The nationality of the surgeon who operated on her at a private clinic in the Majorcan capital has not been revealed.

He lives outside Spain but has been described by Majorcan newspaper Ultima Hora as a long-established professional “who has spent decades working in Palma and other European countries.” The unnamed British woman is said to have died in mid-September.

Her family were informed and travelled to the island after she passed in hospital. A judge in charge of the ongoing inquiry is understood to be probing whether medical negligence played a part in the woman’s death. There has not yet been any official comment from court officials or police.

It was not immediately clear this morning if the dead woman’s family made a formal complaint to island authorities or the investigation was launched without one from them. Earlier this month, a UK coroner warned of cosmetic surgery risks abroad after the death of a British woman in Turkey.

Melissa Kerr, 31, from Gorleston in Norfolk, died in Istanbul after injected fat entered a vein during a Brazilian butt lift procedure. She had travelled to the private Medicana Haznedar hospital for the procedure in 2019. She died on the day of the surgery.

Jacqueline Lake, the senior coroner for Norfolk, said at the inquest she would write to the health secretary expressing concern about people travelling overseas for cosmetic surgery.

She said: “Ms Kerr wasn’t seen by a surgeon or clinician prior to the date of the procedure and underwent a limited assessment prior to the procedures. There has been the release of an international alert to surgeons regarding the high mortality rate associated with this procedure. There has also been the introduction of a voluntary moratorium on this type of procedure in the UK.”

She added: “These are clearly not being followed in Turkey. I’m concerned patients are not being made aware of the risks or the mortality rate associated with such surgery. I do have concerns there will be future deaths and I’m of the view future deaths can be prevented by way of better information."

The type of cosmetic surgery the woman at the centre of the Majorca probe had arranged, has not been made clear.
She has been described by Ultima Hora as “young.”
