Charles said: “Today doctors informed his family that there is no further hope and have recommended end of life decision. The family is now deciding end of life matters and a further statement will be issued on Wednesday.

“We are asking for privacy for his family during this difficult time, and they wish to thank everyone for the hundreds of messages of support and prayers that have been received,” he said.

“This has been a difficult time for them.”

Tom has been a huge star in movies spanning several decades with some of his best-known work including Natural Born Killers, Black Hawk Down, Born On The Fourth Of July, and Heat.

His most recent project sees him play a police detective for the science fiction movie Impuratus, with his character becoming a believer in the supernatural after he witnesses the deathbed confession of a Civil War veteran.

He told Age Of The Nerd: "I enjoyed the script. It is a terrific leading part. It was a period piece, which was interesting, and I really like the people that were involved."

Tom also spoke about being blown away by the movie when he saw an "early cut" of it and that he "can't wait to see the final version with the music all in."

He added: "The quality was astounding, the acting (including some of mine, of course), but seriously everyone was outstanding and the photography superb."

Tom also spoke about his career spanning 30 years in the chat, claiming he owed his success to his "passion for the work."
