Finley Quaye has dodged jailtime after confessing to smashing up his ex girlfriend's café in Edinburgh last summer.

The Scottish singer, who first found in fame in the 90s with his hit song Sunday Shining, plead guilty to threatening and abusive behaviour after the incident on July 15.

Quaye, 49, broke open the front door of Rena Gawa's eatery and damaged her business by throwing chairs and flowers. He also smashed a number of glasses during the incident.

The court heard that doorframe of Gawa's café was "splintered" by Quaye before he entered the property inside.

Quaye was arrested following the incident and spent the weekend in police custody. His solicitor, Cameron Tait, told the court his client had travelled to Edinbrugh to speak to Rawa after a family death. Tait also explained that Quaye had called the police himself and was head as "incoherent" during the 999 call.

He added that Rawa was not seeking a non-harassment order and still wished to be friends with his client, despite their romantic relationship ending. Tait went on to say that Quaye is seeking help for his issues by attending addiction groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, and that he was "struggling" when the incident took place.

Quaye, who currently lives in Kensington, London, was sentenced to a 12 month supervision order by Sheriff Matthew Auchincloss. The sheriff also extended his sympathies to the defendant and agreed not to impose a non-harassment order.

This isn't the first time Quaye, who the 1997 MOBO Award for Best Reggae Act, has had run-ins with the law. He also avoided prison in 2019 after threatening to shoot a bar manager and "get a grenade" following a gig he'd played at London's Troubadour venue.

The BRIT Award winner admitted to assaulting Robert Jenei in the early hours of September 8, before kicking a BMW owned by a member of security staff and yelling threats of bodily harm and racist abuse. He was later sentenced to 200 hours of unpaid work, a fine of £525 and a rehabilitation order. He was also handed 225 hours of community service following a charge of aggravated assault in Edinburgh in 2012. Later that same year, it was revealed Quaye was bankrupt and owed £383,000 in taxes.
