A former Metropolitan Police officer has appeared in court after engaging in an "inappropriate relationship" with a victim of domestic violence.

Daniel Humphreys, 37, who was based at the force's central north command, faces two counts of misconduct in a public office, between 14 July 2019 and 21 November 2021. The first charge alleges Humphreys 'wilfully neglected to perform his duty in that he 'engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a vulnerable female whom he had met whilst investigating an alleged domestic violence incident in which she was the complainant'. The second alleges Humphreys 'wilfully misconducted himself by obtaining Metropolitan Police computer systems for a non-policing purpose and sharing that information with a person who is not a police officer'.

Bearded Humpreys appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court wearing grey trousers, a white shirt and black tie, speaking only to confirm his name and date of birth. District judge Neeta Minhas released Humphreys on unconditional bail ahead of a plea and trial preparation hearing at Southwark Crown Court on 23 October. Humphreys, of Coulsdon, Surrey, gave no indication of plea.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) launched its investigation in April 2022 after receiving a mandatory referral from the Met. "In December 2022 we completed our investigation and sent a file of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service, which authorised the charges," an IOPC spokesperson said.

The Met Police have said Humphreys was placed on restricted duties in June 2022 and has since resigned from the force.
