King Charles was given a standing ovation yesterday when he addressed the French parliament.
The warm reception showed the important role the monarchy can play in building diplomatic bridges and fostering alliances. The King used his speech to praise the deep bonds that exist between our two countries. Strengthening those ties has rarely been so vital in the face of Vladimir Putin’s aggression.
In his speech, Charles deplored Russia’s “horrifying” invasion of Ukraine and urged the world to stay steadfast in its support for Kyiv. His message could not have been more timely. There are fears that if Donald Trump wins the presidential election next year he will pull the plug on US military support.
Cracks are also beginning to appear in Europe’s united front, with Poland announcing it was halting arms shipments to Ukraine. Kyiv’s forces have regained yet more territory from the Russian occupiers during their summer offensive. There can be no let-up in our resolve if want Ukraine to triumph.

The Mirror’s campaign to change the law on organ donation has helped save hundreds of lives. But the NHS still needs more people to agree to become donors. That is why we welcome plans to encourage people to sign up to the organ donation register when they apply for a passport.

At the moment there are 7,000 people on the waiting list for a transplant. Sadly, last year more than 400 patients died awaiting a transplant, while 732 were taken off the waiting list as they were too ill for surgery. The more opportunities people have to sign up as a donor, the more lives can be saved.
