Tottenham would have first refusal on signing Harry Kane - but only if the striker decides to return to the Premier League.

Kane, 30, left Spurs for Bayern Munich during the summer transfer window after a £100million deal was agreed between the two clubs. The England captain has signed a four-year deal in Bavaria and has scored four goals in his first four Bundesliga games.

Tottenham chair Daniel Levy was asked at a fan forum on Tuesday evening whether the club inserted a buy-back clause in Kane's transfer to Bayern. Levy confirmed there was, but he didn't provide much detail on how the clause could be activated.

Spurs fans would love Kane, who signed for Bayern in pursuit of a first major honour, to re-join the club after his German adventure. Kane is Tottenham's record scorer with 280 goals and has achieved the same feat at international level, scoring 59 times for England.

Sky Sports News have revealed how Tottenham's buy-back clause works. If Bayern accept a transfer offer from another Premier League club for Kane, Spurs will be allowed to match that bid and open contract talks with the player first.

Tottenham inserted a similar clause in Gareth Bale's transfer to Real Madrid a decade ago. That clause wasn't activated because Madrid never accepted a transfer bid for Bale during his nine-year spell, although he did re-join Spurs on loan for the 2020-21 term.

There is a good chance Kane will return to England before hanging up his boots. He's previously admitted his desire to become the Premier League's all-time leading scorer and has Alan Shearer's record of 260 goals in his sights. He is currently 47 goals behind.

Kane has said: "People will talk about the record and Shearer, but I've got plenty of football left in my career. For now, it's about trying to achieve things here and trying to push myself and the team to try and reach new levels with this club."

Kane has also hinted at re-signing for Tottenham. He said on joining Bayern: "It's not a goodbye, because you never know how things pan out in the future... I’ll see you soon."

The prolific star is expected to win several trophies during his time in Germany, including the Bundesliga title. Being a Bayern player also gives Kane the chance of starring in the Champions League. Bayern take on Manchester United at home on Wednesday evening.

Tottenham, meanwhile, are looking to rebuild under Ange Postecoglou. Spurs aren't competing in Europe this season but have won four of their first five league games.
