If you're lucky enough to have an outdoor space of your own, the likelihood is that you'll want to start preparing your garden for the harsher cold months. Your flowers may not bloom the same, and your once green space may look a little more orange and brown, but that doesn't mean you can't put the work in to ensure your garden stays gorgeous whatever the weather.

Pro horticulturalist Monty Don has explained that there are things you can do now it's approaching autumn, such as trimming hedges. "It is safe now to trim hedges in the knowledge that the vast majority of nesting birds have fledged", he explained.

He said it's important that you "clip hedges to the height and shape that you wish them to remain for the rest of the year" as regrowth will be slower, so there won't really be another opportunity to trim them again as they won't grow back very quickly.

When it comes to method, he recommends starting "with the sides" with an "outward slope" from the top to the bottom, as this ensures that the "lower section is not shaded by the top growth", which is bushier, as it gets more sunlight.

He said that you should "cut the top, using a string strung between canes as a guide. Deciduous hedge trimmings can be mown and added to the compost heap and evergreen ones taken to the council green waste."

Property expert Andy Simms, from MyBuilder.com also recently shared that it's important to mow your lawn during September. He said: "Your lawn will need to be mowed before the cold weather hits. Leaving it too long can cause issues when trying to mow it in winter, but mowing it too short is also a problem. This time of year, it's sensible to raise your cutting level, allowing the blades to stay several centimetres long, and avoiding damage in the winter months."
