Jurgen Klopp explains why Liverpool's away form had made him an 'anti-alcoholic'

Jurgen Klopp has claimed that Liverpool’s awful away form last season turned him into an “anti-alcoholic” as continued to be deprived of a well-earned pint.

The Reds endured an extremely difficult time of things away from Anfield last term. Eight of their nine Premier League defeats came on their travels, whilst they only won two away league trips before English football took an enforced break for the World Cup in Qatar.

Since then, they have certainly improved. Saturday’s 3-1 comeback win over Wolverhampton Wanderers made it eight away games without defeat - five of those being wins. Klopp will be among those to be relieved to see that record continue, with the German now able to enjoy a drink once he returns to Merseyside.

Speaking after the full-time whistle at Molineux, the Liverpool boss said: “Much better, it feels much better, I only have a beer when we win an away game. And last year I almost became an anti-alcoholic! So it’s of course better.

“But we all know that everything is new. We cannot always mention last season, as bad as we was and as useful as it might be. But obviously we don’t think about our away record anymore, so when we came here today, and when I saw the first half, I didn’t think the same as last year. We have to do better, we have to create something new.”

It wasn’t all so straightforward for Liverpool against Wolves. The home side were utterly dominant throughout the opening period and deservedly led through Hwang Hee-Chan.

Gary O’Neil’s men should have extended their lead and were made to rue a number of missed opportunities. Liverpool improved after the break and eventually secured three points through Cody Gakpo, Andrew Robertson and a Hugo Bueno own goal.

Klopp continued to express his delight with the win but insisted that his side’s performance was far from perfect. He added: “I saw some bad things today, and a lot of good things in the second half, so I’m really happy.”

The victory against Wolves leaves Liverpool third in the early Premier League standings, with four wins from their first five games. Klopp will be keen to see Liverpool extend their positive recent away record over the next few weeks.

The Reds’ next assignment away from Anfield sees them kick off their Champions League group stage campaign against Austrian side LASK. They then return to Anfield for back-to-back home games against West Ham and Leicester in the Premier League and the Carabao Cup respectively.
