Jurgen Klopp only signed a new Liverpool contract last year, but the Anfield chief could soon still interest from the German FA after they parted company with Hansi Flick on Sunday afternoon.

Flick, 57, was already under pressure after Germany were eliminated from the 2022 World Cup at the group stage, but Saturday night's chastening 4-1 defeat against Japan proved to be fatal for the ex- Bayern Munich coach.

Klopp is widely regarded as one of the finest managers on the planet and would be regarded as a major coup for the German FA, who will be aiming to make a blockbuster appointment ahead of playing host to next summer's European Championships.

While Klopp has admitted that managing his country would be a "great honour", he has also stressed that he would not be willing to break his Liverpool contract to pursue such an opportunity. The 56-year-old is currently tied to the club until the summer of 2026.

However, it is worth noting that Klopp does intend to return to his homeland once his Anfield adventure reaches its conclusion. Furthermore, there is an exit clause in his contract which that means Liverpool will help to facilitate a return to Germany when the time comes.

While Klopp has previously outlined his desire to take a sabbatical after leaving the Reds, it remains to be seen whether or not serious interest from the German FA would see him change his future plans.

Regardless, though, it appears unlikely that Klopp will be leaving Anfield before 2026 if you take into account his comments on staying loyal to a club where he has enjoyed significant success since moving to these shores.

Former Germany captain Lother Matthaus tipped Klopp to succeed Joachim Low back in 2020, telling Sky Sport Germany : "When you talk about possible candidates, there is only one person that everyone would want in the future, and that is Jurgen Klopp. He is extremely successful, personable and equally popular with fans and the media."

Klopp remained coy about the prospect of coaching his country as recently as this summer, telling Sky Germany in July: "The job of national coach is and would be a great honour - there's no question about that. The problem that stands in the way of the whole thing is my loyalty.

"I can't just leave Liverpool now and say I'll take over Germany for a short time. That doesn't work and the request isn't even there. If I'm supposed to do that at some point, then I have to be available and I'm not currently. I have a responsibility towards the club.

"Basically, it's an interesting job. But I don't know yet whether I'll do something completely different after I leave Liverpool. I want to keep my options open."
