If your partner says he’s going fishing, he may well be dipping his tackle where he shouldn’t.

Some 21 per cent of fishermen use their hobby to hide an affair – taking their kit along for secret romps so their significant others don’t think they are angling for anyone else.

Golfers are second most likely to use their hobby to mask infidelity, packing their clubs when they go for a bit of fore-play, then gym fanatics, who put their training gear in the car as they head off to work up a sweat with their lover.

The poll of 2,000 for dating site IllicitEncounters.com also found amateur footballers, rugby players and cricketers use their sports as an excuse when playing away.

Spokeswoman Jessica Leoni said the cheats lull partners into "a false sense of security", adding: “Next time your partner says he’s gone fishing, don’t be so certain he’s only after fish. He may be casting his net further afield and his hobby is a cunning ruse to get him out of the house.”
