Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have been surrounded by split speculation after taking time away from the spotlight, but one royal expert has suggested there was another reason for their silence.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were hit by false claims that their marriage was on the rocks back in July, as nasty rumours circulated that they were spending time apart. A source close to the couple hit back at the speculation and said it was "literally made up".

Royal historian Tessa Dunlop has also weighed in on the couple's romance as she rubbished the rumours. Tessa said the couple were actually laying low to prepare for a huge announcement.

"There's been divorce speculation circling, partly because we've become impatient about not having seen enough of her for a while," Tessa suggested. "We want more Meghan."

The expert said Meghan and Harry's silence is linked to rumours that Meghan is set to make a big comeback to Instagram. Rumours have been swirling that the actress is set to return to the social media platform as an influencer, after ditching the joint royal account she shared with her husband. The couple became inactive on the profile after they stepped back from the Royal Family.

Tessa said they've avoided being seen out together in order to "add to the value of the official announcements and events they're doing." She added: "There wouldn't be a high level of interest if we saw and heard from her all the time."

Speaking to New magazine, Tessa insisted there is "no evidence of trouble in paradise". She also said it's right for Meghan to hold off on announcing her next career move until after her husband's Invictus Games project.

Harry set up the Invictus Games, a Paralympic-style sporting competition, in 2014 to help injured and sick military personnel and veterans. This year's event is set to take place between September 9 and September 16.

The Invictus Games will be held in Germany for the first time this year. Harry will be at the event from the start, with his wife joining him later on in the competition. The couple will both be at the closing ceremony.
