Premier League supporters will get a new chance to hear VAR discussions between officials.

PGMOL chief Howard Webb had previously committed to making talks between officials available to fans throughout the season. He initially appeared on Monday Night Football back in May alongside Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher to explain a host of decisions throughout last season.

Speaking at the time, he said: “Obviously, this is something new. We are making a small step forward and going forward into next season we’ll be looking to do more of the same. We can’t play it live in game. That is not allowed within the laws of the game. FIFA don’t allow it to be played out during the game.

“Who knows where that might go in the future? But there is nothing from stopping us from doing what we are doing tonight and showing that information later.”

Now, the former referee is set to ramp up efforts to make VAR discussions more public. Fans will get the chance to listen in to VAR discussions as part of a new programme “Match Officials: Mic'd Up” that airs on Wednesday. The programme is set to feature former Manchester United and Liverpool forward Michael Owen. It will be available on Sky Sports and is set to get underway at 8pm BST.

The programme comes amid a very difficult start to the new season for match officials, with a number of high profile errors afflicting the early matches of the campaign. Wolverhampton Wanderers were left incensed after not being awarded a penalty against Man Utd for Andre Onana’s foul on Sasa Kalajdzic.

Wolves boss Gary O’Neil confirmed that he had received an apology from the PGMOL in the immediate aftermath of the incident. Speaking at the time, he said: "I thought he was going over to the screen at first but unfortunately he booked me and not Onana.

“But fair play to Jon Moss afterwards for coming out and apologising. I understand the rules [of sticking with the on field decisions as much as possible], but I don't fully accept it.

"I have spoken to the officials about it already. It is a difficult decision for the on-field official, we can't just leave it. If we are all saying it then he needs to have a look.”

The debatable decisions have continued to come. Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper was left incensed after a few contentious calls in his side’s defeat to United at Old Trafford.

Alexis Mac Allister was also sent off on his Liverpool debut - VAR failing to overturn the decision - and then had the decision rescinded upon appeal. Mikel Arteta was also furious after Kai Havertz saw his penalty shout turned down upon review against United at the weekend.
