Davina McCall shares 'mortifying' twist in new dating show for single parents

My Mum, Your Dad follows a group of single midlife parents who come together at a country house retreat with the objective of finding love and host Davina McCall has shared everything you need to know about the new series with the Mirror.
The new ITV series which airs from Monday, September 11 at 9pm on ITV1 and ITVX showcases the highs and lows of a group of single parents as they're presented with opportunities to get to know their housemates better with the possibility of finding love along the way. Speaking to the Mirror and other press, Davina explains why the contestants' children are what help to set this series apart from other dating shows.
She said: "A few people have been asking you know why do the kids nominate their parents? But, I think that's what gives it the extra heart – watching their reactions to what their parents are going through and then supporting each other and then willing their parents to find someone. I thought one of the most moving things was this idea that as a child you can't move on with your life until you feel that your parent is happy and how hard that is for a child. This is what sets it apart, it's not cynical. It is just about the love, there's no prize money. The prize is love and also I think this idea that we're reframing midlife."

Davina recalled putting forward her own idea for a dating show to ITV and used her single friends as a guide for how the programme could play out. She remarked: "The baggage that we bring at our age, that is what makes it interesting. Does my baggage suit your baggage or does my baggage clash with your baggage?"
ITV politely declined Davina's idea but, informed her that they were looking at a different format to a dating programme for single parents before subsequently giving the series the green light and inviting Davina to host.

Veteran TV presenter Davina explained that the grown-up children are shocked to discover a huge twist after dropping off their parents at the stunning country house. Unbeknownst to the parents, the kids will watch their every move from a nearby location where they'll be able to witness all the action of their parents’ journeys to find love, plus get the opportunity to play matchmaker and decide their mum or dad’s dating fate.

Davina confirmed the parents were "absolutely mortified" when they found out the truth about the role their children played in the process.
Addressing he differences between My Mum, Your Dad and other dating shows, the host continued: "There are no cameras in the bedrooms and I think it's important to point out that it's different in that way. For me personally speaking, I'd rather watch the hint of love, a hint of something coming up, should I, shouldn't I, a moment of tenderness. That's so exciting, jumping into bed with each other once you've seen it once doesn't mean anything."
Davina, who revealed she's "manifesting series two" of My Mum, Your Dad ahead of the premiere revealed the "frustrating" moments she encountered during filming.
"Sometimes people misread something and that's quite frustrating because I'm outside watching something unfold and I'm like, ‘Please let me go in there.’ And I’m told, ‘No, we’ve got to let it play out,’ so it's frustrating watching," she said before adding that she was allowed to break the rules on one occasion.

"I don't know if it made it into the show or not because I haven't seen all the episodes because I wanted to save it but, there was a moment, once I did actually say to the production team, please let me just go talk to this person because they were having a proper crisis. This person was so lovely, and just could not see it for themselves. And had to go in and say, ‘We chose you because you are brilliant.’"
Opening up on the sort of singletons viewers can expect to see, Davina reveals there is a widow, Roger, whose daughter sweetly nominated him after the death of her mum. The host remarked: "What I love about Roger and you'll get to know this about him as the series goes on he just always slightly says the wrong thing. There’s always a slight overshare."
Davina added that one singleton, Sharon, has been "unsuccessful time and time again" and has been without a partner for over five years. "She's gorgeous but she's got her wall that she's built up and we can all relate to that," she said.
The host explained there will be plenty of tears and tough moments as the parents look to find love again as well as plenty of heartwarming scenes as the show progresses.
My Mum, Your Dad starts Monday 11th September, 9pm on ITV1 and ITVX. The series will run on consecutive weeknights for two weeks.
