Colorado Buffaloes coach Deion Sanders is very confident in his new team following a debut win.

In his first match in charge, the 56-year-old led his players to a shock 45-42 victory over TCU on Saturday having joined the team after leaving Jackson State for the Pac-12 program, which managed just one win last year.

Since his arrival, the former NFL player has transformed Colorado’s roster with multiple players joining the team while others decided to leave when Sanders, for better or for worse, said there’s “going to be change.” Before his first match as Colorado's coach, Sanders predicted he and his new team could achieve special things together.

"I think there will be movies made one day about this team and this coaching staff, because I can see what’s about to transpire,” the two-time Super Bowl winner told his team. “I believe that much in you. We’re about to go do something that they wouldn’t fathom.” Sanders was a head coach at Jackson State, an HBCU (historically black college and university) for two years before joining with Colorado, a Division One school.

A significant issue across sport is the lack of minority representation in coaching, and Sanders has called out those uncomfortable with a black coach and a majority-black team playing at the highest level of US college football. Sanders addressed a reporter by saying “do you believe now?”, after reading something they had written that he was not happy with.

“I read through that bull-junk you wrote,” Sanders said. “I read through that. I sifted through all that.” When the reporter didn’t answer, Sanders added: “You don’t believe. You just answered it. You don’t believe. Next question.”

Sanders’ first win as Buffaloes coach was secured in style when his son Shedeur Sanders, 21, threw the game winning pass to freshman Dylan Edwards with four minutes remaining in the game. In total, he threw for 510 yards with four touchdowns, as the Buffaloes pulled off a surprising victory.

“A lot of you didn’t believe in us,” Shedeur Sanders said after his inspired performance. “It’s crazy because you just got to understand our coach, Coach Prime, my dad, everywhere he went, he was a winner. Every game, every opportunity, he took advantage of.” Sanders, whose 510 yards from Saturday’s game set a school record, saw his odds to win the Heisman Trophy move from 100-to-1 to 28-to-1 at Caesars Sportsbook.

His teammate and two-way star Travis Hunter, who took 11 catches on offense against TCP, saw his Heisman odds go from 80-to-1 to 22-to-1. Coach Sanders was full of praise for the 20-year-old who is making a significant impact on both sides of the field.

“Travis is it,” Coach Sanders said. “We’ve got a couple guys in here who should be front-runners for the Heisman — that’s how I feel. Who did what they did?” The Buffaloes will next take to the field against the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Saturday, their first home game of the season.
