Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has explained his decision to reverse his international retirement ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Onana announced his retirement in December after a falling out with Cameroon boss Rigobert Song that resulted in him getting sent home from the World Cup. However, he has now been recalled for Cameroon's AFCON qualifier against Burundi.

"It all depended on him," Song said when discussing Onana's return. "He knew what he had to do. If he's on the list, it's because he did the right thing. He's one of the best goalkeepers.

"The door was always open. There was never a problem with Andre. Today, we are satisfied that he is reunited with the group." In an apparent response to Song's comments, Onana cryptically posted a picture of a flower on social media with the caption: "le mensonge donnes des fleurs mais pas de fruits", which translates to English as "lying gives flowers but no fruits."

And Onana has now explained that he decided to come out of retirement because of his "unshakeable love and attachment to my homeland", despite admitting he did have some doubts over the decision. "In the world of football, as in life, decisive moments arise that require crucial choices to be made," he said in a lengthy statement on social media.

"In recent months, I have been confronted with trials marked by injustice and manipulation. Yet my unshakeable love and attachment to my homeland, Cameroon, remain intact. My desire to represent my country has never wavered since my youth, and this aspiration remains an inseparable part of my identity.

"Nothing and no one can shake this conviction. I answer my nation's call with unshakeable certainty, aware that my return is not only to honour my dream, but also to respond to the expectations and support of Cameroonians, who deserve a national team determined to shine.

"In the face of manipulation, lies and abuse of power, I choose to remain true to my ideals, proudly representing a country that deserves our sincere commitment. Now is the time to unite, to work in harmony for our common good: Cameroon. I would like to salute the government, which is working hard to build a better Cameroon for all.

"My thoughts are with the people of Cameroon, to whom I offer my infinite thanks for their support, and whom I look forward to seeing again. Time, the infallible judge of all things, will eventually enlighten us and reveal the rightness of our actions. My commitment to Cameroon remains unwavering, and I am determined to play my part in seeing it prosper."

Onana's return to the international stage does pose a mean as he could miss up to six Premier League games this season if Cameroon are able to qualify for AFCON. As a result, United's new No. 2 Altay Bayindir could have a key role to play in the New Year.
