Tesco shoppers are stunned at the price the supermarket chain is selling Mr Kipling cakes for.

Many have taken to social media to share their disbelief at the price tag for the eight pack of Mr Kipling's Angel Slices. One X (formally Twitter) user said that they "knew inflation was bad" but could not understand the price tag at their local store in Dagenham, adding: "Are you having a laugh!?".

One user, @iluvchibiis, added: "8 slices of Mr Kipling angel slices are £4.30 I can’t breathe" and another said: "Mr. Kipling cakes are now £4.30…… this cost of living crisis has gone way too far I'm not accepting that". One shopper shared that you could get the lunchbox favourite for a little bit cheaper for £2.50 but you would need to be a Tesco Clubcard member. In their tweet, the user said: "Desperate for you to get a club card."

The cost of the eight pack Mr Kipling product is priced at £3.95 on Tesco's website which is the same as Sainsbury's and Ocado. Inflation has really hit the pockets of Brits over the last year. UK food inflation has been slowing down month-on-month, however, it still remains stubbornly high.

Recent data from the British Retail Consortium (BRC) suggests it dropped to 11.5% in August from 13.1% in July and 17.4% in June. It's important to note that falling inflation doesn't mean that prices are going down - it just means they aren't increasing at such a fast rate.

This isn't the first time the owner of the popular brand Premier Foods, which also supplies retailers with household favourites including Super Noodles, Ambrosia, Oxo cubes and Bisto, has made headlines for the price of their products.

The consumer group Which? recently revealed that the price of some Mr Kipling cake products had tripled over the last two years. Which? found that a pack of Mr Kipling Bakewell Slices cost £2.75 in Sainsbury's - up from the £1 they were in June 2021. Mr Kipling's Chocolate Slices were also just £1 at Tesco two years ago but soared to £2.59 in June.

Premier Foods said the increases seen were made to offset the “significant” cost of inflation. However, the company has since confirmed that there would be no further price increases for the rest of this year.

In a statement to The Sun, Alex Whitehouse, Premier Foods chief executive, said: “We believe the recent period of significant input cost inflation is now past its peak and have no further price increases planned for the rest of 2023.”

A Tesco spokesperson told the Mirror: “With household budgets under continued pressure, we remain absolutely focused on providing great value for our customers. Many product categories have experienced higher input costs, but wherever there are opportunities to pass on savings to our customers we will do so and have cut the price of hundreds of everyday products.”
