Distraught woman leaves dinner table after father-in-law's cruel comment

A busy schedule and married life with kids means it can it hard to see family even at the best of times. When it comes to spending quality time with loved ones, planning a day out, or an activity and lunch to keep everyone entertained is essential. Despite most catch-ups being fun and easy, on a few occasions, a family gathering can be completely drama-filled.
One distraught woman says she was left with no choice but to leave the dinner table after her father-in-law's cruel remark. The father-in-law reminisced about his son's school days and dating life - before he made the bombshell comment.
Sharing on Reddit, the woman said: "[He] was just jokingly being like 'Honestly, him in High school, I'd never thought he'd actually settle down with somebody' and my father-in-law (FIL) was like 'Yeah, even less with someone like you'. I asked him what he meant by that." She pressured him to elaborate on his statement, and her father-in-law responded by saying: "Well you weren't exactly his type in high school, you know?"
He then added: "Not saying you weren't pretty enough or anything like that, you just wouldn’t have caught his eyes." Furious, the woman got up from her seat to go to the bathroom and eventually she and her husband ended up leaving the home.
The angry wife says she won't apologise to her father-in-law unless he does so first. However, she was told her decision could create a rift in the family. She said: "Once we were home, my husband received a text from his mom saying that my reaction was childish and disrespectful and that we wouldn't be invited again until I apologised. My husband replied that I'd only apologize if my FIL apologised first. He didn't get an answer but his sister texted me that I needed to apologise ASAP because I was putting my husband's relationship with his parents at risk over a misunderstanding."

However, one user commented defended her actions saying: "There was no misunderstanding. I guess you'll just have to find a way to make it through life without invites from your in-laws." Another person said: "You have a wonderful husband. He's a keeper. The rest of his family … not so much."
