Piers Morgan shares advice he gave to Rishi Sunak as they met in business class

Piers Morgan has told how he used a cricket analogy as he gave Rishi Sunak advice on how to improve the state of the country. The TV presenter had a chance meeting with Mr Sunak as they both jetted off to California for their holidays in August.

Joking that it was "probably the last thing [the PM] wanted to encounter on day one of his vacation", Piers said the two "had a very nice chat in mid-air" in which the PM asked him what he thought about the current political situation. The former newspaper editor and Britain's Got Talent judge went on to compare the struggles of the country to the woes and successes of the England cricket team.

"I said it reminds me a little bit of the England cricket team who went through 17 Test matches and won one," he told Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg. "And we were playing a very dour, uninspiring form of cricket and were facing a barrage of bouncers and really just not exciting anybody with the way they were playing. And then we changed everything. We brought in a new Captain Ben Stokes and a new coach Brendon McCullum. We had this new philosophy called 'bazball' and 'bazball' was about ripping up the rules, getting on the attack, getting on the front foot. And Rishi Sunak's a big cricket fan and he was listening to me and I said, you need to be a bit more 'bazball' Prime Minister."

Pressed if he was giving Mr Sunak advice, Piers said "a little bit". He went on: "The country, I think, is crying out for hope and inspiration but also a little bit of excitement. We're all fed up with the malaise which has engulfed this country, aren't we? We're fed up with all the strikes, with the misery, with the NHS problems, with the post pandemic issues. Everyone is feeling the pinch. Everyone's feeling miserable. And I want to see leadership, from the top, from the government and from the Prime Minister and the Chancellor, in particular, get on the front foot, start playing some shots to get this country back where we think [it should be]."

Meanwhile Chancellor Jeremy Hunt admitted there has been "turbulence" in Cabinet with the turnover of ministers but insisted Mr Sunak was trying to limit changes by focusing on "who is going to get the job done". It follows the appointment of Grant Shapps as Defence Secretary, his fifth Cabinet role in a year, and the promotion of Sunak ally Claire Coutinho, a former junior minister, to Energy Secretary earlier this week.

He told Sky's Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips: "We have had turbulence caused by things like (the) pandemic, big changes in our economic model... but what I would say is since Rishi Sunak has become Prime Minister that has changed. He has made only the most limited changes. The most recent change, the Defence Secretary, was caused by a personal decision by Ben Wallace to step down. What Rishi Sunak is interested is not the personalities but who is going to get the job done. And when people get the job done he backs them."
