Armed police have rushed to the scene of a dog attack after an altercation between pets in a park left two women in hospital.

Emergency services closed Leigh Road in Atherton, Greater Manchester while they carried out a search of the area, and a dog was seized.

One eyewitness described a woman "with her hands all bandaged up" being taken into an ambulance.

Another claimed on social media that the breed of one of the dogs involved was an "XL bully", and said it had been "seized but not yet put down", reports Manchester Evening News. The breed of the dog has not been confirmed by police.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said the incident began at 11.30am on Saturday morning when they received reports of a dog attacking another dog, after which the owners of both pets are understood to have sustained not-life-threatening bite injuries. One of the dogs has been left in serious condition and is receiving treatment.

No other people were injured in the attack, which was described as an "isolated incident". Armed officers and specialists from GMP's dog unit were deployed.

In a statement to Manchester Evening News, Greater Manchester Police said: "At around 11.30am this morning (Saturday 2 September), officers were called to reports of a dog attacking another dog on a playing field near Leigh Road. Specialist officers and emergency services attended the scene, and the owners of both animals were taken to hospital with bite injuries which are not life threatening and not believed to be life changing.

"Initial enquries suggest that the offending dog broke free from its collar and attacked another dog in the field. When both owners attempted to separate the dogs, the two owners were injured. The other dog is in serious condition and receiving treatment. The offending dog has been seized and an investigation will take place. No other party was injured during this isolated incident."

The Mirror is campaigning to overhaul the Dangerous Dogs Act as Brits continue to be killed or seriously injured in vicious dog attacks.

The Mirror's demands are...

1) The overhaul of the Dangerous Dogs Act. An Urgent review of the law is needed and tougher penalties should be considered.

2) Enforce the rules to stop the illegal and irresponsible breeding and selling of dogs.

3) A public information campaign to promote the importance of responsible dog ownership and the need for training.
